Delivering world-class trains, with world-class service
Hitachi Rail is a fully integrated, global provider of rail solutions across rolling stock, signalling services and turnkey.
With revenues of ¥562.7bn in FY17, over 80% of which are from outside of Japan, we have a presence in 27 countries, across 11 manufacturing sites on three continents and some 12,400 full time employees.
Our engineering heritage and culture is rooted in Japan, where our first steam and electric locomotives were built in the early 1920s. A major inroad to the field of passenger transport was made in 1964, with the supply of our first Shinkansen ‘Bullet Train’ vehicles to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics.
We continue to deliver the most current Shinkasen for Japan’s railways, and have successfully exported our technology and expertise to multiple rolling stock projects across the globe - from high speed, light rail and metro, to driverless technologies for passengers and freight.
In modern times, our global footprint has been established primarily on organic expansion in the U.K, leading to major contract wins including High Speed 1 and the Intercity Express Programme, and the acquisition in Italy of AnsaldoBreda and Ansaldo STS, which has diversified revenue and added capability in signalling and turnkey in particular.
We are ambitious and continue to seek to expand into new key geographies, such as North America, and new products including the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital. Drawing on the wider Hitachi Group’s market-leading technology capabilities and R&D, we strive for industry leading innovations and solutions able to deliver value for customers and sustainable railway systems which benefit wider society.

Our values inform us how we go about our work, these are taken from our parent company, Hitachi, Ltd:
Wa (Harmony): We need to show respect to our colleagues, to our suppliers, our clients and our stakeholders. We show respect to earn respect.
Makoto (Sincerity): We should act with integrity in all we say and do, this shows that we are sincere in holding to our stated values. We maintain fairness in all our dealings; our reputation is founded on how we go about our business.
Kaitakusha – Seishin (Pioneering Spirit): We lead with ambition, seeking new challenges; we are not afraid to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of our business.
Hitachi Rail’s UK Gender Pay Gap Reporting
Gender pay gap reporting in the UK reflects the importance of diversity and inclusion to Hitachi Rail’s plans for business growth. Our sector is characterised by a predominance of male employees and, if we are to meet the demands of a modern railway, we must introduce people new to the industry from a multitude of backgrounds and possessing different skills. Equally importantly, greater diversity enables us to create the best, most innovative products and services for our customers and the wide cross-section of passengers they serve.
Having calculated our gender pay gap report using the reporting regulations, Hitachi Rail in the UK is providing fair and equal pay for our people. We will continue to strive for our goals for a more diverse workforce and to ensure that our business and all our stakeholders share in the many benefits this will deliver.
